Burning Bridges

I have given my heart time to miss you.
I have watched from a distance
as you pack me up,
put me away,
each box in a state of disarray.
There was no time wasted,
for either of us.
I know that I have not glanced back and thought
“Am I doing the wrong thing?”
“Should I crawl back and offer my apologies?”
I may be loyal to a fault.
I may hang on past the expiration date.
But when my end is reached,
when the fuel is on the fire,
the bridge soaked with gasoline,
I watch the flames rise higher
and roast marshmallows on my memories.
