The Second Lesson on Devotion

“We do what is required of us to the absolute best of our ability- to do more is impossible, to do less is unthinkable.”
Lois McMaster Bujold

This is the second lesson on devotion. When you devote yourself to an art, to a skill, you do so with the intention of doing it with the best of your ability. For me, it’s never a half-assed sort of situation. I never want to put 50% of my energy, 50% of my love into a relationship. I don’t know how to live half a life, and I don’t know how to be half a submissive. That doesn’t mean that every waking moment in my life is devoted to being a submissive, or that that is all our relationship consists of. What it does mean is that there is a background track running a lot of the time that observes, learns, desires to please.

I have a tendency to adapt my skills as a submissive to the dominant that I am with, at least to a certain extent. When I am devoted to the dominant that I am with, I learn the skills that they need me to have to serve them best. This doesn’t mean I am lacking in my own desires or personal skills. I do try to find people that I match with somewhat, and I negotiate far more now than I did when I was new. However, I have developed a rather lengthy set of skills that have gone onto my resume. Some of those skills I have skimmed the surface one, knowing the basics of what I need to know to serve. Some of them I have discovered I have a true passion for and have thus devoted myself to gaining wisdom from others.
